UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Format Changes Explained

Everything you need to know about the new Swiss-model tournament format.

The Champions League replaced its group stage with a single league phase, and the change is more consequential for bettors than for supporters. More matches, more variation in fixture quality, and a qualification structure that changes how teams behave in the final rounds.

How the league phase works

Thirty-six clubs sit in one table. Each plays eight matches against eight different opponents — four at home, four away — drawn from seeded pots, so no club plays the same opponent twice and the schedules are not identical.

The top eight go straight to the round of sixteen. Teams finishing ninth to twenty-fourth enter a two-legged playoff for the remaining eight places. Twenty-fifth and below are eliminated outright, with no parachute into a secondary competition.

What changes for bettors

• Fixture strength varies far more than it did. Two clubs on the same points can have faced genuinely different schedules, so raw table position is a weaker signal than it was under the group format.
• Dead rubbers are rarer. Under the old format, qualified sides regularly rested players in the final round. In a 36-team table, the difference between eighth and ninth is a two-legged playoff, so motivation stays live much deeper into the phase.
• The eighth-place cutoff creates its own dynamics. Sides on the boundary in the last two rounds are playing for something concrete, and their behaviour diverges sharply from sides already safe or already out.
• More matches means more data, but also more fixture congestion, and rotation becomes a larger factor in team news than under the old calendar.

Where the market has been slow

Qualification markets have been the softest area. Pricing a club's chance of reaching the top eight requires modelling an unbalanced schedule across a 36-team table, which is a harder problem than pricing a four-team group, and the early prices have shown it.

The other lag is in the final two rounds, where the market has been slower than usual to reflect which sides are genuinely playing for something. A club mathematically safe in sixth behaves differently to one fighting for eighth, and prices have not always separated them.

A note on sample size

The format is new, which means historical base rates are of limited use and everyone — bookmakers included — is working with thin evidence. That cuts both ways: there is more mispricing available, and your own estimates deserve less confidence than usual. Size accordingly.
